The Sukoon Residence, meticulously crafted as a dwelling emerging amidst water and greens, is home for the Sachdevas. Built over a decade ago, the homeowners sought out Design Matrix at the behest of a friend to improve the lighting that had gone awry or ceased to fulfil its purpose. This was a project that will always remain close to our hearts for its beautiful setting and wonderful owners… as well as for the immense responsibility that we felt weighing on our shoulders to get every last adjustment perfect; for the way small, single sources lit up entire rooms; for how unremarkable equipment created spir itual experiences ; for how inside and outside light quality was tempered to be perfect balanced so when night falls, you feel perfect tranquillity – sukoon! Being a retrofit site and currently being lived in, the challenges in executing even the simplest lighting scheme are immense. The lighting upgrade was therefore done over several weeks in small portions, through several mock-ups and testing to achieve the right level, the right coverage, the right impact even if that meant lower lighting levels, attempting to light only a strategic portion of the space / structure and striving to be unobtrusive and in the background. The setting of the house afforded wonderful reflec tions of the architecture in the surrounding waterbody. We attempted to light the exte riors judiciously while meticulously curating the night-time experience of the space and the image mirrored in the water-surface. The result is not simply a picture perfect night time shot but a space that is infact calm and serene and in every sense of the term an embodiment of sukoon
